“The Age of Adaline” (2015) tells the story of Adaline Bowman, born on New Year’s Day in 1908. After a near-fatal accident in 1937, she miraculously stops aging, remaining 29 years old indefinitely. To protect her secret and avoid unwanted attention, Adaline leads a solitary life, changing her identity and residence every decade, distancing herself from anyone who might notice her unchanging appearance.
In 2015, under the alias “Jennifer Larson,” Adaline meets and falls in love with Ellis Jones, a charismatic philanthropist. Despite her reservations about forming close relationships, she finds herself drawn to him. Their relationship becomes complicated when they visit Ellis’s parents, and his father, William, recognizes Adaline as the woman he once loved decades earlier. This revelation forces Adaline to confront her past and the choices she’s made to keep her secret.
Realizing the impact of her immortality on those she cares about, Adaline decides to leave Ellis to protect him from the complexities of her condition. However, as she drives away, she gets into a car accident, mirroring the event that halted her aging years before. This time, the combination of hypothermia and a defibrillator restart her natural aging process. She awakens in the hospital, ready to embrace a life where she can age alongside her loved ones.
The film concludes with Adaline and Ellis planning their future together. Adaline notices a strand of gray hair, symbolizing her return to a normal human existence. She smiles, accepting the opportunity to live a full life, growing old with the man she loves.
