The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) is a poignant neo-western directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones. The film tells the story of Pete Perkins (Jones), a Texas ranch foreman, who seeks justice for his close friend, Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedillo), a Mexican immigrant unjustly killed by a border patrol officer, Mike Norton (Barry Pepper).

Pete forces Norton to exhume Melquiadesโ€™ body and accompanies him on a journey to return the remains to Melquiadesโ€™ hometown in Mexico, as he had promised. Along the way, the film delves into themes of friendship, redemption, and the human cost of border tensions.

Shot against the starkly beautiful landscapes of Texas and Mexico, the movie blends a mystery with a deeply emotional narrative. Its non-linear storytelling and raw performances give it a haunting, meditative tone.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada received critical acclaim, winning awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Tommy Lee Jones.
