The film follows Anna Taylor (Christina Ricci), a young woman who, after a car accident, finds herself in a morticianโs funeral home run by Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson). She awakens on a table, seemingly dead, and is told by Eliot that she is in a state between life and death, where he can communicate with her and prepare her for her journey into the afterlife.
As Anna struggles to understand her situation, she becomes increasingly confused and terrified. She is told by Eliot that she is, in fact, dead, and that he has the power to guide her through this transition. However, Anna begins to suspect that something is wrong. She starts questioning whether she is truly dead or if Eliot is manipulating her mind. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) is desperate to find her and tries to uncover the truth behind her disappearance.
Meanwhile, Anna’s boyfriend, Paul (Justin Long), is searching for her, convinced she is alive. He uncovers disturbing truths about the mortician and attempts to rescue her from what he believes is an unnatural fate. As Paul delves deeper, he begins to unravel the mystery of Annaโs death and the possibility that she is being held against her will.
The film explores themes of mortality, fear of the unknown, and the psychological terror of confronting death. The ending is left ambiguous, forcing the audience to question whether Anna is truly dead or if she is still alive, struggling to break free from Eliot’s control.
