The story follows Terri Griffith, an ambitious high school journalist in Phoenix, Arizona, who believes her articles are not taken seriously due to her appearance. After being denied a coveted newspaper internship, she suspects gender bias and decides to disguise herself as a boy to prove her point.
With the help of her younger brother, Buddy, and her best friend, Denise, Terri enrolls in a rival high school as “Terry,” adopting a male persona. Navigating the challenges of maintaining her disguise, she befriends Rick Morehouse, a socially awkward student, and assists him in gaining confidence. During this time, Terri develops romantic feelings for Rick, complicating her situation.
